Retaining your audience’s attention on web based training (WBT) content is a constant challenge. My approach to keeping WBT and eLearning courses interesting is to use a mix of audio, video, graphics, and animations. The old days of showing only a screen full of text and static images with an accompanying narration serves only alienate your audience.
One level of effort I perform is to provide only the information the learners need to know instead of loading them up with extraneous information. Providing the learner with the information they need to know shortens the training and enables me to spend more time on attention getting interactions and animations. I also place knowledge check questions at the end of each topic that challenges the learner on the content they reviewed. The learner will be more apt to pay attention knowing that their participation is required by answering questions during the training presentation. The interaction between watching the screen and answering a question not only helps keep the learner’s attention, but it prepares them for the final assessment.
